Who needs some help?

Is there anyone out there with any questions about starting your own business?

Re: Who needs some help?

I do! My venture isn't really a business, but we do sell our magazine to sustain the venture. I have a couple of questions:
As you probably know, printing costs a lot of money over $1,000. We've received enough donations (and with the help of the YV grant) we can cover the costs of printing. The question then becomes, how much we should charge for each publication? If you divide the total costs by the number of issues, it comes to to be approx. $5 per issue. But we feel like that is too much to charge per issue - it's only 28 pages and its 8 x 6 inches. We want to charge $3 per issue because 1) we want to make it accessible to those who might not have $5 to spend on a magazine but who would still like to be cultured and 2) make it appealing to others who don't know about JJ Express. So is it ok to be losing money in the beginning? do you have any advice on minimizing overhead costs?

also, how would you market a business? how do you get it made into a non-profit?

Re: Who needs some help?

Me and a couple of friends are trying to start a baseball team for kids in our community who aren't able to play rec, for whatever reason that may be. (i.e financial, tryouts etc.) after thnking about it we dont think that it will work out as well as we originally thought it would... such as who we will play, what to do and so on. Does anyone have any one have any advice to get us started?

Re: Who needs some help?

So you want to start a baseball team for underprivileged kids in your community? What is your action plan so far? You can receive seed grants up to 1000 from YV. But it's best to minimize your costs by asking for in kind donations where possible. For instance, batting equipments and places to have the tryouts. Any specific advice you are looking for? I will try my best to help :)

Re: Who needs some help?

well I think what the three of us are stuck on is the fact that theres no other teams to play. would it be a good idea to email the director of the rec league in my town and talk to him about it?

Re: Who needs some help?

Yes it would! Another idea might be to organize a big group and have them play each other as a club sport. everyone would still have a lot of fun, and it would solve your problem of not having anyone to play. good luck!

Re: Who needs some help?

Yea, that would be a great idea but just remember you must be persistent if you dont get any replies back. The best way to talk to someone is in person so you can get your answer right away but emails are okay too. It would be a good idea to mention how your team will benefit the community. Oh yea, have you thought about talking to one of the physical ed. teachers? I think some of them also coach a league on the side. Even if they dont have a team themselves, they might know someone who does :) You never know until you ask. At this moment, it would be a good idea to build up your network. ^^ You can get more resources about that on this website. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Linda
