My venture, Green Teens, really wants to do something special for Earth Day since we are an environmental club- and we finally got a great idea, however, we have a few questions. I looked on the forums to see if there was anywhere for already created/sustaining ventures could post questions and get help or ideas from other ventures, but I couldn't quite find what I was looking for, so I thought that this would be a great place to start a forum topic like this! So feel free to ask questions or just search around for ideas in this forum!

So... my question: For Earth Day, Green Teens wants to hold a Lightbulb Trade-in where citizens can come and trade-in five regular lightbulb for 5 CFL's. We realize that this may be a bit expensive (and we do want to do this for free as service to the community- we have about $1000 from YV and funds we have made), however, some of the club members recall (myself included) hearing about a group or groups that will donate large number of Compact Flourencent Lightbulbs (CFLs) to groups for free or at a very reduced rate. Does anyone have any ideas about groups or companies that do this? Where we can get large numbers of CFLs for free? Etc...?

Thanks,
Jessie

Re: Venture Event Ideas/Questions/Feedback

Sounds like a great idea! Our school did a "Change a Lightbulb, Change the World" program last year and although it could have been more successful - it was pretty good. Maybe you could also do a screening of "An Inconvenient Truth" for the community beforehand to educate them and get them pumped up for the lightbulb exchange.

I don't know of any specific groups that donate cfc's but you might want to check out Home Depot's environmental pledge and write to your local stores to ask for donations of cfcs. http://corporate.homedepot.com/wps/portal/Environment

My only question is though - what will you do with the old lightbulbs? I hope you won't throw them away - they would still contribute unecessarily to landfills. Perhaps you could find some way to use them until they die out?

Good luck!

Of Course we wouldn't throw them away. I have a friend who has done this before as well, and we are going to talk to him more about it- however, there is a recycling center that will take the lightbulbs and dispose of them (recycle them) properly!

Re: Venture Event Ideas/Questions/Feedback

Yay! Sounds good. I was just a bit miffed by this article I saw online while I was searching for groups that might donate CFCs and there was this person who wrote to a letter to an online magazine saying that she felt bad about throwing away all her regular lightbulbs in favor or CFCs.
And he basically said something along the lines of - "don't feel bad about throwing away your lightbulbs! you're contributing to the landfills for a good cause!"
I wrote an angry letter to the editor. ^_^ S/he is not a through and through environmentalist!
