In the wake of the LRA: HIV in Uganda and Sudan
Image

A June 2007 report by the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Tulane, estimated that as many as 38,000 children had been abducted since the start of the conflict two decades ago.
At reception centres across northern Uganda, returning abductees are given the option of voluntary HIV counselling and testing, and are informed about HIV before being reintegrated into the community.

Many children are abducted to be used as combatants. Others are made to serve as porters, cooks, guards, servants, messengers, or spies. Many young girls are forced to marry or perform sexual services for male combatants. Male and female child soldiers are often sexually abused, and are vulnerable to contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Young females are at high risk of unwanted pregnancies
