A Tutoring & Mentoring Program That Partners Universities With Underserved Elementary Schools

We started back in 2003 with the goal of connecting University students with underserved youth in the DC area. Our program is centered around tutoring and mentoring that is not only about reading and writing, but about building lasting relationships that benefits both the children and the University students through a lasting relationship. Since 2002 we've grown tremendously. Our program now incorporates a campus visit, where the kids gain first-hand experience with the University setting. The attend seminars in subjects relating to their work at school, visit with athletes and professors and even eat in the dining hall. The point is to really give them a tast of what hard work now can bring later.
In 2005 we added a book writing and illustrating project as well. The kids actually write and illustrate their own children's story, giving them the opportunity to practically use the skills they've worked so hard to gain - reading and writing. It also acts as a wonderful, positive creative outlet!
